ADVENTURE FORTY-ONE: Rotorua

What an incredibly extraordinary place. We love Rotorua. Definitely a highlight!

Just driving into the city and then around is an adventure in itself. The neighbourhoods, town centre and local parks are literally steaming! This is because the city lies within the Rotorua Caldera, a large volcanic area connected to the Taupo geothermal region.  It’s nickname is ‘Sulphur City’ and it is famous for it’s bubbling mud pools, shooting geysers and natural hot springs. Unfortunately, it does whiff a bit – the hydrogen sulphide smells a bit like ’rotten eggs’, but you do get used to it.

Rotorua has so much to offer with it’s history, rich Māori culture, natural topography and geothermal activity, adrenaline adventures, beauty spots, walks, bike rides, skyline gondola, hot pools and mud spa’s, to mention but a few. Here’s a snippet of what we did here:

Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Te Puia by Night

Redwood Tree Walk/Bike and by Night

Mt Tarawera Crater walk

Hell’s Gate Mud Baths and Spa

Whakarewerewa Living Village

Kerosene Creek

Lake front walk past Ohinemutu traditional Māori Village, Government Gardens and Kuirau Park
