ADVENTURE FORTY-TWO: Campsite Intro

As our ZigZag passengers will be predominantly camping whilst in New Zealand, we have taken a keen interest in the many different camping options there are across the country. As well as the better known holiday park brands such as ‘Top 10’ and ‘Kiwi’, there are many smaller ‘family run’ establishments throughout NZ, and more basic Department of Conservation sites and ‘bush camps’. We have tried to check out as many of these as possible to assess their suitability for inclusion in the ZigZag itinerary.

For our ZigZag travellers, we always want to provide good, clean facilities wherever we can, so we have been carefully selecting campgrounds accordingly. We have tried to mix it up by staying at the big holiday parks as well as the smaller run camps as we know that everybody’s expectations are different. For example, we have found an almost spotless, brand new Top 10 with all the mod cons you could need, and have loved staying there. Then we have found the most basic campground in one of the most remote areas that you can drive to in NZ, where we were the only ones there, camping on the side of a hill overlooking the ocean, not a building in site and only with a very basic toilet and shower. (It was still a hot shower mind!) And we loved it there too.

Generally, we have been very impressed with all the campsites that we have managed to stay at or visit whilst on our tour. Our audit of each camp ground has included their facilities, ease of access, cleanliness, location, pitch environment, etc.

Here is an example of a typical camp site to give you an idea of that they're like. This particular one is a family run camp near the centre of Rotorua.
