Overview

ZigZag’s 17-day Top Of The North tour departs the fascinating geothermal wonderland of Rotorua, and heads north to the Coromandel Peninsula - over 400 kilometres of dazzling white sandy beaches that surround a mountainous interior covered in native rainforest. We spend four days here, soaking up its rustic, relaxed, unspoiled atmosphere.

We then drive through to sub-tropical Northland at the top of the island. First stop is a scenic surfing village called Mangawhai Heads that has amazing walks and a picturesque lagoon right next to our campsite.

We then meander our way up to the tiny settlement of Russell, a pretty village and harbour renowned for its charming seaside atmosphere and rich historical past, where we set up camp for three nights. Russell is a fantastic location from which to explore the Bay of Islands, a world-famous destination comprising of 140 islands brimming with stunning scenery and abundant marine life, and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds - New Zealand’s most important historic site.

Heading further north, we arrive at Whatuwhiwhi on the impossibly beautiful Karikari Peninsula. Whilst here, we make a day trip up to the northernmost tip of the country – Cape Reinga. This optional all-day tour visits the famous lighthouse at the top of the North Island and the giant sand dunes at Te Paki.

Driving south and west, we travel through more historic settlements before reaching the Kauri Coast – home to New Zealand’s last surviving giant Kauri trees. On our last night of the tour, we walk amongst these silent sentinels whilst looking for wild kiwi birds.

We then travel down to Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, where our tour ends.
